Freelook: A software headtracker for computer simulations and disabled access.

A proper manual is coming soon, below are quick and dirty instructions to getting Freelook working.

Language: English, French

Installation

  1. Run the installer executable.

Marker and Hardware Configuration

  1. Attach a small (1" square or less) piece of paper to the brim of a dark cap. For better results you can use a 1cm polystyrene ball (found at craft shops), or for far superior performance, attach a wide-angle LED light to the front - a standard 10-20mCd 5mm red wide-angle LED should suffice; superbright LEDs are too powerful and will flood your camera's sensor.
  2. It can sometimes be beneficial to slightly defocus your camera so that the marker appears more rounded.
  3. Configure your webcam's exposure settings to an acceptable level - if you are using an LED, set it so that the LED is the only visible feature (check that it's viewable at all required head angles), if you are using a non-lit marker, set things up so that the market is reasonably visible as one of the brightest things in the viewport. If your webcam software doesn't support changing exposure, try using Webcam2000.
  4. If you plan to use Freelook for desktop applications, turn OFF mouse acceleration (labelled 'enhance pointer precision' in XP) in your mouse settings.
  5. Running

    1. Run Freelook.
    2. Configure freelook as needed.
